"For things to change, I must change first."
After 15 years working as a Social Practitioner in front line social services Aaron is now working privately. In those formative counselling years, a substantial amount of time was spent managing Family Court accredited Anger Management programs. Aaron chose this work as he has a fundamental belief that all people, no matter the demographic or financial background, deserve support and encouragement to learn, change and succeed. In that role he interviewed and assessed over 2,500 men, co- facilitated over 1000 men’s groups and conducted 1000's of hours of individual counselling. This highly specialized work required an in-depth focus into the field of domestic violence/abuse, anger management, relationship conflict and substance addiction/abuse. All this further underpinned his skills as an experienced trainer and presenter on the issues regarding domestic violence (DV). Aside from DV his real interest was change and how people can do it.
Even though counselling, group work and training are Aaron's primary skill set, his clients needed more than just counselling and the evolutionary step from counselling is coaching; thus, began his coaching journey. Over the last 10 years Aaron has studied Neuro Linguistic Programming , completed a Certificate in Multiple brain integration Techniques (Mbit), studied Buddhism and Yoga at length and brings a combination of all these teachings into his clinical practice and daily life. Much of his coaching experience came via the delivery of over 15 'Personal Leadership' programs for Inspired Learning (www.inspiredlearning.global). This was completed in corporate settings for organisations such as Spark, Sovereign Insurance, Auckland Airport.

“The most important meditation you can do right now is critical thinking, followed by action. Discern what your world is, know the plot, the scenario of this human drama. Then figure out where your talents fit in to make a better world, and each of us must do something that makes our heart sing because nobody will want to do it with us if we're not passionate or inspired.” Dali Lama.
Counselling or coaching
Counselling and coaching are in many ways similar but there are also differences. Simply put; Coaches provide a distinct service that helps clients work on their goals for the future and create a new life path. Counsellors spend more time examining the past, looking for solutions to emotional concerns. Counselling is about uncovering and recovering, while coaching is about discovery. Thankfully, having both counselling and coaching skills is complementary to both you and me. I’m happy to work in the way that is most beneficial to you.
My clinical/COACHING practice is underpinned by:
- Narrative therapy
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Solution Focused therapy
- Motivational Interviewing
- Positive psychology
- Imago Therapy
Previous counselling clients have come to see me for anger management, relationship conflict, addiction/substance issues and family issues. I have worked with men, women, teens and families.
As I coach you can expect me to focus on:
The area of your life you most want to work on. It may be your relationships, your health or your career. Once we find the area of your focus I/we will need to:
- Define your beliefs, values, goals and desires; your purpose for wanting what you want. The why ?
- Formulate a plan that will use your skills/talents/strengths and your underlying beliefs that could trip you up.
- Hold you accountable for progress; gently. But you can't expect change if you don't commit.
- Provide structure, encouragement and support
Are we the right fit?
This is very important to figure out. Some studies show that the models used by practitioners have little to do with your level of development and change. Its is said that maybe 80% of what matters is the rapport held between us. So, if you or I sense that were not a good fit or I know I can't provide the best service for your needs then this has to be addressed. I am more than happy to refer you on to someone if need be.
